Son Raw vs. The Psychotic Hippies is an intersectional analysis covering the political ramifications of- actually no scratch that, it’s a fucking beat tape.

Sparked by a feverish desire to escape the awfulness of pandemic life while stuck in a terrible, cramped living situation, the album asks the question: “what if a beatmaker/critic who routinely mocks the past 40 years of rock music, made a rock album?” The answer is an acid fueled romp through the hairiest, gnarliest, headbanging-est proto-metal obscurities of the early 70s, as parsed through the dustiest and grimiest styles of contemporary Hip Hop. Muscular drums collide with roaring guitars, all processed through the lo-fi filters of the beloved SP-404 sampler sequencer to create a psychedelic love letter to Rock’s antisocial side and exploitation cinema’s cheapest thrills. “I wrote the album from the perspective of an imaginary band – one filled with big thuggish looking goons who’d break a pool cue over your head while downing a pitcher of Molson Ex” said Son Raw.

First single ‘Angel Dusted’ sets the tone with a thundering break and spaced-out delay, before exploding into a high-octane orgy of guitar tones and vocals. Elsewhere, ‘Stakeout At The Copa’ slinks and saunters with sleazy cop show energy, while closer “For a Few Bitcoin More” draws on the drama and violence of classic spaghetti westerns. The result is a beat tape that would challenge even today’s most adventurous rappers, while also providing a tight, engaging listening experience for anyone interested in the wild side of record nerd and beatmaking culture. Says Son Raw: “with the world having gone to shit, this tape offers an escape into a reality no less chaotic, but a lot more fun than our own. Plus, I got to take the piss out of hippies and disregard the entirety of the punk canon, so that was fun.”

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
